'Why Are You So Happy All The Time?' First Answer
kj. nelson-sayers
Sometimes I am asked a question:
"how are you so happy all the time?”
And upon this query I try to respond
I like the way joy moves through me
I like the way it rests for a single moment on my tongue
before it disappates like cotton candy
I like the way it tastes like a pinch of fine sugar
I cannot describe it in such a way
that you could replicate the taste for yourself
only that you will know what pure, undiluted sweetness is
when you experience it
I will happily share as much of my stores as I am able
—there is joy to be found in sharing it—
but if you ask
”how are you so happy all the time?”
I will attempt to answer to your satisfaction
but simply put,
I like the way joy moves through me
Strange and Peculiar
I bless the earliest moments of the morning sunrise
I bless the first muted notes that float above the vinyl
anoint my face with splashes of water by the handful
take a single sip, a single nibble
fold my hands and lift my eyes to the sky
and dance along the dividing line
which separates spirit and mundane
I give all my strangeness and all my peculiarity
so that I may see joy between each breath
so that I may delight in that divine ecstasy
