What Makes a Book a Bible?

If it changed my life in any sort of way (for the better or for the for the worst) or if it is something I don’t go a day without thinking about ━ it qualifies for a bible. I do admit, I am quite stingy with my five stars and praise when it comes to reading, but I can tell you now that these books are so personal to me. This does not mean I recommend them to everyone; it’s more something for myself. Everyone has different tastes and loves.

In No Particular Order...

━ The Secret History

If you know me, you know how much I love this book. I read it on holiday and could not put it down. If you love a character-driven book, this one if for you. Tartt grips you with the characters, and makes you feel grossly connected to the protagonist, Richard. Hate how we’re so alike. The writing was beautiful, the plot was captivating and yes, my fatal flaw is ALSO unfortunately a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs. This is a 1000000/10 book. I don’t think I will ever love another book more (apart from… maybe one.)

━ The Outsiders

This book is what I would call a perfect book. This is a really great classic to start with if you’re starting to get into them; great plot, characters you get emotionally attached to, perfect hook, devastating ending. Also ━ amazing Halloween inspo. I would also recommend this book to everybody ━ it’s that kind of book.

━ Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Again ━ if you’ve ever known me you know my heart lies and dies with Percy Jackson. This was the first ever book series I read as a child and I got addicted to everything about it: the plot, the characters, the Greek retellings. This was also where I got my first ever book crush. Percy Jackson was the standard for little me. I re-read this book series every single year, and I’ve been even crazier about it ever since the show came out. Perfection. Also, Percy Jackson SOLOS that four-eyed wizard freak.

━ The Song of Achilles

I have recently found that a lot of people actually hate this book and for a reason I partially understand. After reading the Iliad not long ago, I understand why people hate the book due to the fact it is essentially bad fanfiction, however, in order to enjoy this, you have to read it as the retelling it is. It’s clearly not a factual, it’s a made up story using inspiration from the Iliad. Besides, the writing is the most beautiful writing I have read in all my life. It’s poetic and reads like song lyrics. I personally adore this book, it was romantic and it was heart-breaking and I highlighted the hell out of this one. I’m still waiting for Miss Madeline Miller to write a retelling of Ares and Aphrodite.

━ Animal Farm

Ahh, another absolutely brilliant classic. This book created my fear of pigs and now I can’t look at them without thinking “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” It is so haunting and really does make you sit in silence for a while.

━ Certain Dark Things

To me, this is the holy grail of fantasy. It’s an ADULT fantasy book about vampires in Mexico City. There are vampire gangs and interesting vampire lore and a really cute modified dog to get emotionally attached to. It’s a standalone, and while others might not think it is all that, it is a book I think about always, and was a huge inspiration for writing my book when I had such horrible writers block.
